- 中三: 茶道欣赏
- 中四: 华语舞台剧欣赏
(I) Appreciation of Chinese Culture (ACC)
The Appreciation of Chinese Culture (ACC) is a two-year programme which consists of:
- Understanding the History of Chinese Diaspora & Early Immigrants in Singapore (Secondary 1)
Through broadcast storytelling, students will learn about the history of the Chinese Diaspora in the 19th century, the establishment of Chinese clan associations outside China, as well as the lives and contributions of the early pioneers such as Tan Tock Seng, Lim Boon Keng, Lim Nee Soon and Zubir Said. Students will also learn about the different culture, heritage and dialects of Chinese Singaporeans.
- Understanding the History of Imperial China (Secondary 2)
Prior to the Sec 2 Overseas Immersion Trip to Xi’an, China, all Secondary Two students will be equipped with knowledge about the history of Imperial China from before Xia Dynasty to Tang Dynasty.
(II) Cultural Experience
The Chinese Cultural Experience activities allow our students to be exposed to Chinese culture through hands-on experiences in:
- Sec 1: Chinese Calligraphy
- Sec 2: Weiqi and 24 Chinese Festival Drums
- Sec 3: Chinese Tea Appreciation
- Sec 4: Theatre Experience
Talent Development Curriculum
(I) Bilingual Development
The Talent Development Curriculum is an extension of the Broad-Based Curriculum and is catered for the Marist Ambassadors who are proficient in English, Chinese and/or both languages. It consists of the following courses:
- Public Speaking Course (Secondary 1)
The course will be conducted in both English and Mandarin. Students will be equipped with onstage oral communication and presentation skills. They will learn how to articulate fluently and confidently in front of a large crowd, read and edit emcee scripts, as well as how to assess and connect with the audience under different settings.
- Student Tour Guide Course (Secondary 2)
Students will undergo training by the National Heritage Board to conduct a heritage-and-food trail at Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall and in the Balestier precinct for the exchange students from Xi’an, China. They also get to be volunteer guides during the Singapore Heritage Festival.
- EL-CL Translation Course (Secondary 3)
Through lectures, group activities, discussions and peer sharing, students will be able to compare the use of the English Language and Chinese Language. Students will be equipped with direct and oblique translation skills and techniques. They will also get to translate different text genres, i.e., emcee scripts, website information and song lyrics etc.
(II) Local & Overseas Immersion Programmes
In order to broaden our students’ horizon, raise their global awareness, and equip them with cross-cultural skills, our school offers our students opportunities to take part in local learning journeys and overseas immersion trips:
- Learning Journey to Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall (Secondary 1)
The learning journey is aligned to the Sec 1 Appreciation of Chinese Culture. Guided by the Secondary 2 Student Tour Guides, the Secondary 1 students will learn more about how Singapore played a part in the Chinese Revolution in 1911, as well as the lives of famous Chinese immigrants and how they contribute to the Chinese society in Singapore.
- 2-week Overseas Immersion Trip to Xi’an China (Secondary 2)
This immersion trip is a 2-week exchange programme with our twinning school, Xi’an Gaoxin No. 1 Middle School. The main objective of the trip is to increase our students’ proficiency in the Chinese language and understanding of China History and Culture. The programme includes classroom experience, intensive Chinese lessons, Chinese Culture lessons, sightseeing trips and community service work.
- 7-day Overseas Immersion Trip to Shanghai and Suzhou (Secondary 3)
This 7-day trip aims to strengthen students’ Chinese language skills as well as develop in them a deeper understanding and appreciation of Chinese culture. Students will also learn about historic values, geographical features, and urban landscapes of Shanghai and Suzhou.
- 7-day SAP Seminar at Shanghai Fudan University (Secondary 3)
Jointly organised by Nanyang Girls’ High School and Shanghai Fudan University, the annual seminar in Shanghai is attended by effectively bilingual student leaders selected from the 11 SAP schools in Singapore and 8 other schools in Shanghai.
