Pupil Librarians’ VIA Project 2015
This year, our pupil librarians once again, for the fourth consecutive year, took on the VIA project of raising funds for the Tana River Life Foundation (TRLF) in aid of the Mitumba Project, Kenya. The Foundation was set up to assist the marginalised communities in Tana River and Lamu Districts of the Coast Province of Kenya through education and acqusition of livelihood skills. The main beneficiaries include orphans afflicted with AIDS, children of subsistence farmers and nomadic pastoralists, and single parent families without any regular source of income. In conjunction with International Friendship Day, our pupil librarians set up a booth in the school canteen to sell special book corners they made, as well as chocolates and candies generously donated by the company, Cocoa Trees. With their persistence and the magnanimous support of our Marist community, the MRL Club managed to raise a total of $3300, a record figure, as compared to the collection of $2820 and $2700 in 2014 and 2013 respectively. The money raised is used to supplement the purchase of 180 student desks for the Mitumba Project. Some of our Marists also had the opportunity to volunteer at the Mitumba Project Jumble Sale in Nativity Church, helping in various tasks like packing and unpacking donated items, manning the stalls and interacting with the public to elicit their participation in the donation drive.
Through this enriching experience, the pupil librarians, as well as the rest of the student population, have gained deeper insights into the meaning of values such as compassion, giving and servant leadership. Moreover, by striving hard to achieve their fund-raising goal, they have gained invaluable life lessons and realised the importance of qualities like determination, diligence and resilience.
We are deeply touched and encouraged by the kindness and generosity received from all who have supported our fund-raising project in one way or another. Our sincere thanks to everyone who has lent a helping hand and contributed to this worthy cause so enthusiastically and wholeheartedly.
