English Language and Literature

The English Language and Literature Department aims to:
  • Develop Marists to be confident and competent communicators in the English Language;
  • Teach Marists the skills and strategies to be increasingly competent in the use of the English Language through the use of pedagogically sound instructional strategies; and
  • Nurture Marists to enjoy the use of the English Language through participating in enrichment programmes and competitions.

To achieve the Department’s goals, the following programmes are offered:
  • MSHS 4-year English Language Curriculum - a close alignment of pedagogical practices, assessment practices, and the EL Syllabus 2010 at each level
  • Reading Programme - integrated in the EL Curriculum with differentiated reading materials
  • EL Learning Festival
  • Sec 1 Choral Reading Enrichment Programme
  • Sec 2 Drama Enrichment Programme
  • Sec 3 Debate Enrichment Programme
  • Sec 4 Oral Communication Enrichment Programme
  • Upper Secondary Theatre Experience

Marists are given the opportunities to participate in the following competitions:
  • The Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition
  • National Schools Literature Festival 
  • Nanyang Girls’ High School Philobytes Conference  
  • All In! Young Writers Festival 

Marists have performed well in the following competitions:
  • Winner of ‘Flash Fiction Competition’ in National Schools Literature Festival 2017
