The English Language and Literature Department aims to:
- Develop Marists to be empathetic and confident communicators in the English Language;
- Teach Marists the skills and strategies to be discerning readers and be increasingly competent in the use of the English Language through the use of pedagogically sound instructional strategies;
- Nurture Marists to be creative inquirers by exploring the use of the English Language through participating in enrichment programmes and competitions.
To achieve the Department’s goals, the following programmes are offered:

MSHS 4-year English Language Curriculum - a close alignment of pedagogical practices, assessment practices, and the EL Syllabus 2020 at each level

Lower Secondary Reading Programme - integrated in the EL Curriculum with differentiated reading materials

Inter-House Flash Fiction Competition
- Upper Secondary Theatre Experience
- A Chapter A Day @MSHS - school-wide morning reading programme
